There are fancier ice cream shops in Louisville, with bespoke flavors that would undoubtedly win out in a taste test. But Dairy Del and Dairy Kastle, just one mile apart in the St. Joseph and Schnitzelburg neighborhoods, are cherished neighborhood institutions that continue to evolve slowly — adding vegan options or cashless payment — without ever forsaking their simple charms. Every year, Dairy Del’s opening marks the true start of Greater Germantown’s summer. Their Boston and strawberry cheesecake shakes are unparalleled. I am glad that Louisville continues to innovate within its ice cream scene — we’re no San Francisco, but we do OK — but I am equally grateful that we aren’t always so fast to tear down our affordable, intergenerational family- and dog-friendly spaces.

It was always a highlight at the Fairgrounds, so when they opened a shop again, I screamed. (See what I did there?) As a kid, I remember going to the Ehrler’s on Breckenridge Lane, our station wagon filled with neighborhood kids.

So bummed the Highlands location closed, but we still make the trip to the one on Dixie Highway.
